Icebreaker tunnel thruster prioritises efficiency
Finnish propulsion specialist Steerprop and Seaspan Shipyards have expanded their collaboration on propulsion technology for Canada’s next-generation polar icebreaker, prioritising efficiency, safety and Arctic readiness.
Initially selected in late 2023 to supply two advanced ice-classed bow thrusters for the new flagship vessel, Steerprop will now also support the integration of the tunnel thruster into the vessel.
The aim is to improve hydrodynamic performance, streamline vessel operation and cut lifecycle costs, vital for one of the world’s most powerful heavy polar icebreakers.
“This enhanced scope demonstrates our deep commitment to customer outcomes, not just components,” said Juho Rekola, director, sales & project management at Steerprop.
“Tunnel thrusters are often overlooked compared to main propulsion, but in Arctic operations, their reliability and performance are mission-critical.”
Gridless technology
To further refine vessel operation, Steerprop and Seaspan are co-developing structural tunnel enhancements, including customised roundings and extensions, to optimise flow characteristics.
In addition, the thrusters will help enable prolonged, energy-efficient Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations, further enhancing the vessel’s capability and operational endurance in harsh environments.
The upgrade is essential to the icebreaker’s ability to carry out year-round missions in some of the world’s most demanding waters, supporting emergency response, scientific research and vital services for Arctic communities.
Steerprop is well recognised for its gridless thruster technology, which the manufacturer said avoids traditional protective grids, giving greater efficiency, easier installation and reduced maintenance. It’s also becoming know for its work with ice class vessels.
It recently supplied a propeller package to Damen’s first in class Azimuth Stern Drive Tug 3413 ICE design, built specifically for Arctic conditions.
The vessel was also reportedly the first to deploy Steerprop’s CRP (contra-rotating propeller) azimuth propulsion system in the tugboat segment.
