Second partnership aims to give ageing fleets second wind

A new European research partnership is seeking to demonstrate how artificial intelligence and low-cost retrofit technologies can help reduce emissions from vessels already in service, reflecting a growing trend towards collaborative projects aimed at improving fleet efficiency without major capital expenditure.

It is the second such partnership announced in recent days, which also looks at reducing fuel consumption and emissions from existing tonnage with the view that much of today’s fleet is expected to remain operational beyond 2040.
