Powering inland waterways: Impossible without better infrastructure

The maritime industry is awash with bold claims and ambitious sustainability pledges – electric vessels, hydrogen-powered ports, methanol-ready tankers. However, beneath the fanfare lies a critical shortfall: the supporting infrastructure remains underdeveloped.

Newcastle University PhD student Paul Simavari is devoting years of study to find answers, and this is the first part of a series of columns that he will write for Maritime Journal as he pursues his thesis.
