Indoors, out of the cold
For its entire 25 year life Rovtech has been providing underwater solutions for particularly harsh environments, but unfortunately this has meant the development team has also had to put up with tough conditions. Until now.
Its new manufacturing site has just been opened in Barrow, UK, complete with a 18m3 indoor freshwater testing tank that will help move projects along: Rovtech have won something of a name for themselves in creating solutions that can help operators ‘see’ below the surface in low visibility or difficult environments, but it’s important to be able to keep an eye on what’s happening during development.
General manager Steve Phelps tells MJ how much easier this new tank makes life: “We can now test everything in freshwater without putting the equipment into salt water; it’s warm and clean and people don’t have to put on thermal underwear and thick socks to cart everything down to the docks. It makes for a much better atmosphere to collaborate in.”
He adds: “It also means if we see something like a contamination trap that has been missed we can adapt the ROV pretty quickly as all the equipment is right to hand. Plus our clients can sit down with us in the new building, watch the new ROV being put through its paces and simply say ‘that needs adjusting’… and we can respond there and then.”
