Euroports earmarks Finnish offshore wind hub

The port could provide a useful link in a supply chain that is groaning under the weight of demand in the wake of geo-political issues and the Covid lockdowns.

Ninety hectares of the 600-hectare Koverhar Harbour will be dedicated to ‘port activities’, the operator says, with facilities that allow it to accommodate major wind turbine projects and in so doing, ’setting the stage for Koverhar to become a pivotal network hub across the whole Baltic Sea region’.

The Port of Hanko, at the southernmost point of Finland, specialises in the export of forest and steel industrial products and the import of road vehicles.

No details have yet been given of what infrastructural changes will need to be made to achieve this transformation, but the first step has been takern in the signing of a Letter of Intent between the port and Euroports.

According to Euroports, the port currently has a deepest draft of 14 metres and quay length of 1,800 metres with eight berths.

Euroports operates and/or manages around 40 sea port terminals and more than 10 Inland terminals and logistic platforms globally, strategically located on key trade routes in Europe and China.

”These facilities have been specifically set up to be flexible and dynamic, and to cater to specialised needs for liquid, bulk, breakbulk and containerised goods where required,” it says.
