Schottel strengthens grip on propulsion

Propulsion form Schottel has bought the majority stake in Elkon, a Turkish specialist in marine electrical system integration, the firms announced at the ongoing Nor-Shipping trade fair in Norway.

The deal has been done in a move for Schottel to become a bigger player from a strategic point of view, said CEO Stefan Kaul.

“With Elkon a renowned and very successful supplier of electrical power system engineering, design and integration for vessels, we will be able to achieve this,” he said. 

“We will expand our portfolio to include everything regarding generation, distribution, storage and management of electrical energy on board vessels. Schottel will become a complete system supplier for electrical and green propulsion.”

The firms say that energy-efficient propulsion concepts, hybridisation and electrification can now be offered in a complementary way, with an overlap in new build and conversion. 

The two firms have already been contrcted independently on the same projects several times, said Elkon manging director Ertuğ Yaşar.

”They involved virtually every possible vessel type, from tugs and ferries to offshore vessels,” he said. ”Both companies thus play an important role in the customers’ decision-making process. In the longer term, they will benefit from each other and further develop, especially towards Green Propulsion.”
