LED lanterns replace rotating beacons in Albanian lighthouses

These MaxLED-800 lanterns from Tideland Signal can contain two, three or four tiers. In the Albanian installations, they will be used in a bi-form arrangement showing a white light of 24,000+ candela, visible over 360° and a range of 16+ nautical miles.

This solution offers integral standby capability, as one MaxLED-800 operating alone would still achieve a range of 14+NM in the unlikely event of a lantern failing.

These LED lanterns require little maintenance, offer minimal power consumption and an operating life in excess of 50,000 hours. They use a DC power supply and are ideally suited to solar installations. Since the MaxLED 800s will be flashing to give the same light pattern as a standard lighthouse installation, this means the power consumption may well be down to around 10% of a constant beam. Taken all together, this combines to make for very low operating costs, especially when compared to the running of normal rotators.

The exceptional range needed for use in the lighthouses is achieved by a powerful, one-piece lens with proprietary Tideland optics, which projects light in an even and consistent 360° horizontal beam pattern. Features include full monitor and control access, user-selectable flash characters and power setting for multiple visible range performance. Constructed in rugged, corrosion resistant marine aluminium, the MaxLED family is designed to withstand the most severe environments, from ice bound latitudes to the tropics.

Nine lanterns, including one spare have been purchased for the first phase of the lighthouse refurbishment project. The Italian mission in Albania includes a number of specialists from the Italian Navy, who have jurisdiction in the fields of marine cartography and beacons. Albanian officers will be responsible for the installation and maintenance of the Tideland lanterns.

The Italian Navy, which provides technical assistance to the Albanian Lighthouse Authority, has chosen MaxLED-800 lanterns from Tideland Signal to replace traditional rotating beacons in lighthouses around the coast of Albania.
