Multibeam installation gives Protector 3D vision

Protector, formerly an ABP patrol vessel of 10 years, underwent significant modification and adaptation in 2003 leading to it being re-commissioned as an active survey vessel for the Port of Southampton and its sea approaches.

The newly installed SeaBat 7101 multibeam sonar system reproduces underwater images from both a horizontal and vertical plane of 3D type quality. It has been submersed and mounted under Protector’s keel, ideal for its specialised role of surveying the seabed and approaches to Southampton Port. The multibeam sonar allows for relatively shallow water hydrographic and engineering surveys within the confines of a busy port.

All work was carried out at the EYS facility at Gosport, which has the capability to lift up to 180 tons and pontoon facilities for up to 130’ length. There are two undercover storage areas of up to 100’ and 130’ length. The facilities and EYS’ fully trained staff saw the project was completed on time and to budget.

Endeavour Yacht Services is the contractor of choice for Babcock Critical Services (Marine) and Protector is just one of eight vessels for which EYS provides GRP and fabric repair and maintenance. All work carried out is to MCA standards.

Endeavour Yacht Services recently achieved ISO 9001 recognition and made its Seawork debut in June of this year.
