New harbour for Aran Islands completed

A new harbour costing € 14m has been completed on one of the Aran Islands, which lie in the mouth of Galway Bay on the west coast of Ireland.

The development on Inis Meain off County Clare used thousands of ‘Xblox’ concrete blocks which were cast from moulds by islanders.

The €14m price tag for Ce an Chalaidh Mhoir included works such as dredging, the construction of a pier and breakwater, and parking facilities.

Construction firm SIAC completed the work under the direction of Galway Co Council and RPS engineering consultants.
