New LNG ferries for Norway
Fiskerstrand Verft AS is to build two new LNG ferries of MM 55 FC LNG type for Boreal Transport Nord AS.
The 62.6m long ferries, which have been designed by Multi Maritime AS, will have a single closed vehicle deck with space for 40 cars and a passenger lounge for 100 people.
They will have electric power transmission with one LNG-driven genset and one diesel genset for back-up. Two azimuth thrusters will provide the propulsion.
From 1 January 2016 Boreal Transport will operate the ferries between Øksfjord-Hasvik, Øksfjord-Tverrfjord and Øksfjord-Bergsfjord-South Tverrfjord in Finnmark, the northernmost county in Norway.
These routes are exposed to open sea so seakeeping was an important issue in the design process. The air draft of the vessels has also been limited to 15m due to the location of one of the ferry terminals, Hasvik, which is situated at the end of the runway at Hasvik airport.
The vessels will be delivered to Boreal in autumn 2015.
