AI used to extend wind farm life

A new project to explore using artificial intelligence to manage the structure integrity of offshore wind turbines has launched.

INTEGRIA kick-off meeting

INTEGRIA, which stands for ‘research into structural INTEGRity in offshore wind using Artificial Intelligence based-models’ will last for three years and is backed by the Basque government and the European Regional Development Fund.

The project began with a kick-off meeting on 30 September which brought together the 12 consortium partners headed up by NAUTILUS Floating Solutions.

Spain is aiming to install 3 GW of offshore wind farms by 2030, representing a major opportunity for the Basque supply chain.

The INTEGRIA project will explore creating digital models to detect and prevent failures, fatigue and degradation of wind turbine components to help extend the life of offshore wind farms.

Currently, there are a number of models and tools for offshore O&M, but these have shortcomings such as unhelpful specificity, a lack of data on failure rates, lack of marketability and a prohibitively regional perspective.

NTEGRIA aims to solve these challenges by creating data-based models trained with sea operation data; designing transition parts with integrated sensor systems; collecting, storing and processing large amounts of data to feed AI models; monitoring real data and anticipating results; and integrating AI-based models with physics-based models.
