Baltic offshore wind drives subsea cable award
Royal Boskalis B.V. has secured a sizable contract for subsea cable installation at Germany’s 976.5 MW Gennaker offshore windfarm.
The Dutch contractor, in consortium with TKF Subsea Solutions, will supply and install 140 kilometres of 66 kV inter-array cables in the German Baltic Sea, supporting offshore renewables expansion.
The contract, signed with OWP Gennaker GmbH, developed by Skyborn Renewables, covers delivery of the complete inter-array cable system linking 63 wind turbine generators.
Sizeable contract
Boskalis said that the award is sizable and reinforces the company’s role in offshore wind and subsea cable installation projects across Europe.
The cables will be manufactured in the Netherlands by TKF before installation by Boskalis’ cable-laying vessel BOKA Ocean.
With a planned capacity of 976.5 MW, Gennaker will become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea, supplying around one million households with clean energy.
Located approximately 15 kilometres north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula within a designated priority zone for offshore wind energy in the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern coastal sea, the project is central to Germany’s offshore renewables strategy.
Boskalis is already active on the site through its subsidiary Heinrich Hirdes EOD Services, conducting unexploded ordnance clearance using the vessel Kamara.
Back in September 2025, Preferred Supply Agreements (PSAs) were awarded for supply of monopile foundations to EEW Special Pipe Construction GmbH, transition pieces to Dajin Heavy Industry, foundation transportation and installation to Seaway7 and inter-array cable supply and installation to the consortium of Boskalis and TKF.
These agreements follow prior announcements of Gennaker for turbine supply and long-term service with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and wind turbine transport and installation with Fred. Olsen Windcarrier.
Skyborn secured the initial building permit for the Gennaker site in May 2019 and maintains site exclusivity for development.
Offshore activities are expected to commence in 2027 and Gennaker is planned to be commissioned in 2028.
