Nature-inclusive offshore wind project launches

The joint industry project (JIP) aims to redefine offshore wind farm development to ensure that these renewable energy projects positively impact natural ecosystems throughout their lifecycle.

“It’s no longer enough to merely minimise harm, we must move towards creating measurable, positive impacts on biodiversity and natural systems,” said Danny Bonnett, Wood Thilsted’s director of sustainability and chair of the JIP.

“This project is a crucial step toward integrating regenerative principles into offshore wind farm design.”

The imperative to decarbonise the energy system is clear but must not come at the expense of the environment, say the project participants. The JIP will address this by integrating nature inclusivity across all phases of wind farm development – from planning and construction to decommissioning – ensuring that both marine and coastal ecosystems are supported throughout the project’s lifespan.

Key players from the offshore wind sector, including Arup, COWI and NIRAS, have expressed interest in joining the JIP, with others currently reviewing internal approval processes.

“While gaining a competitive edge is not the objective of this JIP, participants will benefit from early access to progressive strategies and insights,” said Simon Turpin, project manager for the JIP.

“This knowledge-sharing could offer a valuable advantage as nature inclusive design becomes more integral to project success.”

The project aligns with growing regulatory emphasis on environmental performance, such as the Netherlands’ focus on sustainability in project evaluations and the UK’s new onshore Biodiversity Net Gain regulations.
