Offshore renewables testing begins at Falmouth

A cutting-edge marine renewables device will be tested this summer at Falmouth’s FaBTest site following approval from the Marine Management Organisation.

The small-scale Demonstrator, developed by Buoyant Production Technologies (BPT), will trial innovative technologies designed to advance floating offshore wind, subsea carbon capture and offshore renewables infrastructure.

Machine learning

The Demonstrator’s cylindrical hull was built locally by APCL A&P Falmouth, while topside integration was also completed locally.

The FaBTest site itself is an area of seabed in Falmouth Bay, within Falmouth Harbour Authority’s Waters, which has been leased by the Harbour from the Crown Estate to allow testing of devices related to renewable energy and associated equipment.

Deployment is expected within weeks and will run through October, with local marine contractors supporting installation.

Testing will focus on the performance of the novel hull design and integrated technologies including SAFEMOOR, a machine learning tool developed by Crondall Energy Consultants.

SAFEMOOR will be vital in monitoring mooring systems on future floating offshore wind projects.

David Steed, general manager at BPT, said, “The offshore testing is a key milestone in our development programme. FaBTest was chosen for its wave environment, successful test history and local expertise.”

Backed by partners including Celtic Sea Power, Petronas and Schneider Electric, the project aims to scale up for future applications such as floating substations and carbon capture hubs.
