RWEs Thor windfarm port
RWE has chosen Thyborøn Port in Denmark as the offshore construction base for its Thor offshore wind farm, marking a significant milestone in the project’s development.
Located 22 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland, Thor will be Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, with 72 turbines. Once operational, Thor will create 60 local jobs and produce over 1 GW of green energy, enough to power more than one million Danish households.
“RWE selecting Thyborøn Port as base port for the installation of secondary steel structures and as construction base for Thor offshore wind farm is the approval of our strategic direction targeting to increase the port capacity for offshore wind components,” said Karl Kristian Bro, chair of the board at Port of Thyborøn.
“We welcome RWE to the brand new heavy-duty quayside storage area for offshore wind components and the tailor-made construction base facilities combining both offices and vessels.”
Thyborøn will serve as the home port for the project during the construction phase, which is set to begin in spring 2025.
“Thyborøn will play an important role in the successful delivery of our Thor project – Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm to date. Secondary steel structures, such as boat landings for the foundations, will also be handled there,” said Günther Fenle, project director for Thor at RWE.
“Thyborøn will be home to the Thor team for more than two years as it manages all construction activities.”
Buss Ports will lease an area of approximately 100,000 square metres at Thyborøn Port to support the project, with a dedicated quay in the southern part of the port for construction operations.
In addition to the Thor project, RWE is developing several major offshore wind farms, including Sofia (UK), Nordseecluster (Germany), and OranjeWind (Netherlands), as part of its strategy to triple its global offshore wind capacity to 10 GW by 2030.
