BMT funds next-generation ocean stewards

Building on BMT’s 40-year maritime heritage, the BMT Next Wave Fund has been launched with an initial GB£20,000 donation to support conservation-led experiences for young people aged 5 to 18.

“The ocean is central to our industry and our future. As an organisation with deep maritime heritage, we recognise the sea as both an enabler of industry and a fragile ecosystem in need of protection,” said Laura Blake, head of sustainability at BMT.

”By partnering with Sea-Changers, we’re helping young people experience the marine environment first-hand, sparking curiosity and building STEM skills that will shape tomorrow’s innovators and protectors of our seas.”

Nurturing talent

Delivered through Sea-Changers’ established grants framework, the programme targets schools and communities with limited coastal access, addressing barriers to participation while nurturing future maritime talent.

The fund responds to growing demand for structured youth training and marine engagement, particularly relevent with research showing that 11% of children under 14 in England having never visited a British beach.

Through conservation projects, practical education and inclusive access, the initiative aims to build environmental awareness while supporting long-term skills development relevant to the commercial marine sector.

Around a dozen grassroots projects are expected to benefit, with 85% of funding distributed directly to delivery organisations including schools, charities and social enterprises.

Support will cover transport, equipment, specialist educators and inclusive learning materials, enabling measurable ocean conservation outcomes alongside hands-on marine training.

Sea-Changers will manage project selection, governance and evaluation, ensuring transparency and robust oversight. Applications are now open, with the next funding deadline set for 31 March 2026.
