Cavotec launches mobile shore power system

In a statement, the company said the system is “a next-generation mobile cable management system designed to simplify shore power connections for RoRo and RoPax vessels and support ports in their transition to cleaner operations.”

The new system builds on Cavotec’s existing PowerMove technology, which is already deployed in more than 30 ports worldwide. The updated version includes a redesigned mechanical structure intended to improve flexibility across different vessel types, including an enhanced telescopic boom and cable management system to better align with ship connections.

Cavotec said the system can be operated by a single user via remote control and incorporates a new human-machine interface providing real-time system feedback and troubleshooting functions. The design also introduces a more standardised structure aimed at simplifying maintenance and spare parts management.

The first units have been supplied to the Port of Portoferraio on the Italian island of Elba in the Tyrrhenian Sea, famous for being the place where Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled in 1814.

The port is now a ferry gateway between Elba and mainland Italy and a small but strategically important Mediterranean port.

Additional deliveries of Cavotec’s system are planned for four other ports.

Adoption of shore power systems has been expanding in Europe and parts of Asia, driven by tightening environmental regulations and port decarbonisation strategies.
