ClassNK’s first safety notation for EV transportation
ClassNK has awarded its first-ever Additional Fire-Fighting measures for Vehicle Carrier (AFVC) notation to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines’ LNG-fueled car carrier, Cerulean Ace.
The notation marks a significant milestone in enhancing safety and salvage capabilities for transporting electric vehicles (EVs) at sea.
Cerulean Ace, managed by MOL Ship Management, is the first vessel globally to receive ClassNK’s ‘AFVC’ notation, which takes a more proactive approach towards maritime EV safety.

“The Cerulean Ace represents our dedication to ensuring the secure transportation of EVs, which is increasingly important as the world transitions to electric mobility.”
Notation programme
The notation can be seen as an important step towards the shipping industry addressing the challenges posed by EV fires, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish and pose re-ignition risks.
ClassNK’s AFVC notation programme includes specific requirements for fire detection, firefighting and enhanced fixed fire-extinguishing systems.
The Cerulean Ace meets three of the five key notations: FD (Fire Detection), FF (Fire Fighting) and EFF (Enhanced Fixed Fire-extinguishing System).
It’s also equipped with advanced technology that uses artificial intelligence to detect abnormalities through camera systems, ensuring swift identification and response to potential fire hazards.
By issuing these notations, ClassNK said it aims to set new safety standards for EV transport, encouraging other shipping companies to adopt similar measures to enhance salvage operations and overall maritime safety.
