Kongsberg announces equipment deal for nine tugs

One of the tugs is Med Marine’s new VoltRA electric tug by Robert Allan, which Med Marine says sets new standards in efficiency and emissions reduction, ‘redefining the future of tug operations’ without giving further details at the time of writing.

The new contract is for eight of Kongsberg’s US255 azimuth thruster shipsets for RAmparts 2500-W and RAstar 3200-W designs, where the VoltRA will be powered by its US205 azimuth thruster.

Kongsberg will also supply five shipsets of its new electric towing winches and four shipsets of hydraulic winches. 

“Introduced earlier this year specifically for the tug market, the new electric winches have been engineered to meet the demanding operational requirements of next-generation electric tug operations,” says Kongsberg. “Powered by frequency converter-driven electric motors, tey deliver improved efficiency and reduced environmental impact compared with conventional hydraulic systems.”
