New safety system from Garmin for captain and crew

’Garmin Onboard’ uses wireless detection and engine cut-off technology which allows the captain and crew to move around the vessel ‘with peace of mind’ without the impediment of a physical tether.

Tags can be worn on wrist bands or key ring and can be formatted to identify whether the wearer is captain or passenger. If an MOB is detected, the system saves a waypoint on the chartplotter and alarms go off. If the captain should go overboard, the engine is automatically cut off.

“With up to eight MOB tags, mariners can tag what matters most – adults, children, pets and objects – all at the same time,” said Garmin vice president of Consumer Sales & Marketing Susan Lyman.

“Wearing an MOB tag that can activate an engine kill switch on a boat can potentially save lives. As part of our commitment to making boating safer and more enjoyable for everyone, we designed Garmin OnBoard with safety and convenience in mind using wireless, non-intrusive tags that will bring the boat to a stop and alert those on board if an MOB event is detected.”

Garmin Onboard is compatible with any boat that has an engine cut-off switch and compatible Garmin chartplotter.
