Training USV to launch in Solent
For the first time ever the waters off the UK’s south coast will see the launch of an unmanned service vessel (USV) dedicated to training maritime professionals.
The launch of the new digital training vessel will be celebrated on 7 May at an event which will ‘showcase the broad range of technical skills and career pathways available within the maritime sector’, say organisers South Hampshire College Group, Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF), and Robosys Automation.
The vessel will boost the teaching of maritime skills, helping to address the sector’s skills shortage and regional employment challenges.
Funded by the LSIF, the USV has been built by Plymouth-based HydroSurv with vessel control and autonomous systems provided by Robosys Automation, based in Southampton.
The event will run from 10:00-12:00 on 7 May at the South Hampshire College Group Marine Skills Centre in Woolston, near Southampton.
Guests will include representation from CEMAST, Marine Robotics Innovation Centre, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, National Oceanography Centre, Fareham College, Robosys Automation, Landau Marine, Local Skills Improvement Plan, South Coast Institute of Technology and others.
