Biggest winter dredge at Victorian docks

Using its backhoe dredger, 5,000m³ of silt will be removed to improve navigation and access for vessels in the dock. The silt will then be spread on local farmland, which Land & Water says is part of its ’environmental commitment’ in ’prioritising local havens for wildlife and increasing biodiversity’.

The works are being carried out under a contract with the Canal & River Trust, with which L&W has had a framework contract for more than two decades.

Other works have included water injection dredging and debris clearance in other waterways.

Gloucester Dock, in the west of England, is home to 15 warehouses that date back to the Victorian era at the end of the 19th century. It also has a working dry dock
