BMT unveils AI-powered dredging forecast tools
BMT is introducing dredging management tools that use artificial intelligence to improve how ports predict and respond to sediment build-up in navigation channels.
The company will show off its latest developments at the 24th World Dredging Congress & Exhibition (Wodcon XXIV), taking place this week in San Diego.
The new forecasting system applies machine-learning models to environmental and operational data — including vessel traffic and auxiliary measurements — to predict sediment transport and channel siltation in real time. Designed specifically for complex coastal areas and estuaries, the tools aim to help infrastructure operators more accurately schedule maintenance dredging, reduce environmental impact and optimise operational costs.
Traditional methods often fall short in dynamic environments, but the company’s AI-driven approach seeks to close that gap by continuously improving prediction accuracy through real-world data inputs, such as natural and anthropogenic sediment transport forces.
The tools build on BMT’s long history in maritime modelling, including its work on the TUFLOW hydrodynamic and sediment transport suite, and integrate with its decision intelligence platform, Deep.

BMT’s tools and methodology are further detailed in a supporting whitepaper being released at the event. The company says its adaptive, data-driven approach is designed to help ports navigate increasingly complex environmental and operational challenges with greater confidence.
