EU launches 14 coastal monitoring projects
Fourteen projects have been launched across the EU to monitor, assess and forecast coastal hazards, among other coastal services.
A call for tender was sent out in March under the Copernicus Marine National Collaboration Programme, which is aiming to improve interaction and cooperation with core users to develop a more comprehensive marine monitoring service ‘from the open ocean down to the coast’.
The main objectives are to:
- Support marine policy and governance in EU member and contributing states
- Develop new solutions for coastal monitoring
- Expand cooperation with new regions ‘including the EU’s most outer regions’
- Ensure services are co-designed with end users for real-world impact.
The 14 projects include a high-resolution coastal forecasting system for Liguria; modelling in the Azores for sustainable marine management; hydrodynamic simulations to inform policy on sustainable aquaculture in Spain; and coastal monitoring on seagrass mapping in Germany.
In Italy, a MARCOPOLIS project has been launched to strengthen coastal resilience with targeted training and learning, and Spain the ‘Floretha’ project aims to strengthen resilience to flooding, coastal erosion and harmful Algal booms in the Ebro Delta.
Coastal marine monitoring will be carried out off the Catalonian coast to monitor plastic pollution and preserve biodiversity.
The entire programme, which spans 11 European countries, has been scheduled to last until 2028 and will ‘support the implentation of EU directives through model use cases, particularly between the open ocean and coastal zones’.
