Europe creates port land to accommodate wind boom
Europe is accelerating land reclamation projects to support offshore wind expansion, with DEME at the centre of a growing pipeline of port developments across the region.
At the Port of Cuxhaven, DEME’s trailing suction hopper dredger Meuse River is creating land as part of a major terminal expansion. Working with partners including Depenbrock, TAGU and Boskalis, the project will deliver three new berths, 1,350 metres of heavy-load quay wall and around 38 hectares of additional terminal space to handle offshore wind components.
The works are designed to strengthen Cuxhaven’s role as one of Europe’s key offshore wind hubs, reflecting a broader shift in port infrastructure as turbine sizes and project volumes increase.
The German project is far from an isolated case. Across Europe, similar large-scale dredging and reclamation schemes are under way to support the offshore wind supply chain.
In the UK, DEME is involved in dredging and reclamation works at the Ardersier Energy Transition Facility, where harbour deepening and land development are transforming a former oil and gas fabrication yard into a major offshore wind marshalling port.
In France, civil works continue at Port-La Nouvelle, where new quay walls and reclaimed areas are being developed to support floating wind projects in the Mediterranean.
Further south, port expansion schemes in Italy, including upgrades at the Port of Ravenna and breakwater construction at Port of Livorno, are also incorporating dredging and land development to accommodate offshore energy logistics.
These projects are part of a wider European trend. Key offshore wind ports such as Esbjerg, Ostend and Cuxhaven are expanding capacity to handle increasingly large turbine components and higher installation volumes, as countries push toward ambitious renewable energy targets.
Land reclamation, for quite a while a feature of port development, is now being deployed at scale to meet the spatial and load-bearing requirements of offshore wind infrastructure. Heavy-lift quays, large storage areas and deep-water access are all driving demand for new land creation in coastal zones.
For contractors like DEME, whose core business spans dredging, marine infrastructure and offshore energy, this convergence of port expansion and renewable energy is creating a sustained pipeline of complex engineering projects.
As offshore wind continues to scale in the North Sea and beyond, the reshaping of Europe’s coastline highlights how land reclamation is becoming an enabler of the tide of renewables.
