Expanding port capacity in Bulgaria

By working on this construction project to update the Port of Burgas, Van Oord said it is contributing to the overall improvement of pivotal marine infrastructure in the Black Sea.

This dredging project is part of the construction of a new deep-water berth at terminal Burgas-West in the Port of Burgas which began in November.

Van Oord’s scope of work contains the dredging of the port area to the required depth of 15.5 metres.

This will allow the handling of some of the world‘s largest ships with drafts up to 14.5m and 80,000 gross tonnes, enabling the port to expand its operations amidst a growing demand by the cargo shipping industry in Southeast Europe.

In total, approximately 1.5 million cubic metres of clay will be dredged with a backhoe dredger. 

The construction project will establish a dedicated port zone for container handling and storage, and introduce eco-friendly methods for efficiently transferring cargo between ships and railways in both directions.

Work is to be divided into two phases. The first one includes all activities until the end of the year and will be financed by OP Transport and Transport Infrastructure. The second phase of the project is planned as part of the Transport Connectivity Programme 2021-2027.

Dredging works are expected to be completed in 2024.
