First monopile installed at Thor windfarm

Offshore contractor Jan De Nul has successfully completed the windfarm installation of the first of 72 monopile foundations for RWE’s Thor offshore windfarm.

Installed by the heavy-lift vessel Les Alizés, the foundation marks the official start of offshore construction for a project that will generate over 1 GW of renewable energy, enough to power more than one million Danish homes.

“Our Thor offshore windfarm – currently under construction – will be Denmark’s largest to date,” said Günther Fenle, project director for Thor at RWE.

“The successful installation of the first monopile marks a significant milestone, achieved through the collaborative efforts of everyone involved.”

Subsea installation

Located 22 kilometres off the west coast of Jutland, the subsea installation process involves extensive coordination.

Jan De Nul’s scope includes not only monopile and scour protection installation but also the laying of inter-array and export cables connecting the offshore and onshore substations.

“RWE’s Thor offshore wind farm is one of the key projects of 2025 for Jan De Nul,” said Philippe Hutse, CEO Offshore Energy, Jan De Nul.

“This is yet another big step in building the energy transition and we execute multiple scopes of work: from installing inter-array and export cables, over scour protection to monopile foundations.”

The final monopile installation is expected to conclude by the end of 2025.
