Plans submitted for €150 million port expansion

The Isla Verde Exterior, once completed, will increase the terminal’s handling capacity by half a million TEUs to reach 2.1 million by 2028. A potential second phase will enable 700,000 more TEUs.

TTI Algeciras, which owns the container terminal, already handles some of the world’s largest container ships, but needs more capacity, says CEO Alonso Luque.

The terminal, which is more than 50% owned by South Korean shipping company HMM, will be extended southwards, but no further details of the plans were given at the time of writing.

“This expansion is the natural evolution of over a decade of sustained growth and operational and commercial excellence,” said Alonso Luque, CEO of TTI Algeciras. “The project will not only provide the additional physical capacity the terminal requires but also allow us to respond to new service opportunities and accommodate larger vessels, while maintaining the flexibility and efficiency that have always defined us.”

Algeciras is the largest port in Spain, the third largest on the Mediterranean, and the ninth largest port in Europe in terms of trade.
