UK Docks expands with Smith’s Dockyards revival

UK Docks, based in South Shields, has secured a long-term lease for the two remaining dry docks at the historic site, completing its full acquisition of the former Smith’s Dockyards. 

“We are delighted to have taken over the site and look forward to redeveloping it into a fully functional facility once again,” said Jonathan Wilson, managing director of UK Docks.

“This investment will help us modernise operations and better serve our customers.”

Multi-million infrastructure upgrade

This expansion trebles the company’s geographic footprint on Teesside and strengthens its position in the marine civils sector.

It’s a deal which follows extensive negotiations with PD Ports and will see a multi-million-pound investment in infrastructure upgrade going forward.

The newly acquired site, covering ten acres, includes two additional dry docks, fabrication facilities, laydown areas and extensive workshop space.

UK Docks, already the UK’s largest independent, family-owned ship repair company, will now be able to tender for a broader range of vessels, including offshore support vessels, dredgers and tankers.

The expansion also aligns with Teesside’s growing reputation as a hub for offshore wind and maritime industries.

“Teesside is set up for supporting the offshore wind industry and offshore support vessels, dredgers, survey vessels and tankers. We can be a service centre supporting that huge and growing industry all across the North Sea and beyond,” said Mr Wilson.

He added that as well as attracting new customers, nationally and internationally, the new docks will benefit existing customers because having four docks means additional dry dock space for customers when needed.
