Van Oord completes Romanian coastal works

Commissioned by Administratia Bazinala de Apa Dobrogea-Litoral, the project aims to protect Romania’s coastline from erosion and flooding while boosting regional tourism.

A key aspect of the project was the installation of 9 kilometres of breakwaters to safeguard the coastline from storm waves. These coastal defence structures will mitigate the effects of tides, currents and storm surges, ensuring long-term resilience.

Following the installation, Van Oord’s trailing suction hopper dredger, Vox Amalia, deposited 4 million cubic metres of sand along the affected coastline to further protect against erosion.

This project adds to Van Oord’s extensive portfolio of coastal protection works in Romania, which includes current projects at Costinesti, Mangalia-Saturn and 2 Mai, as well as a previous reinforcement project at Eforie. Together, these initiatives will protect more than 29 kilometres of coastline.

In line with Van Oord’s commitment to sustainability, the project also includes the creation of artificial reefs and bio-structures. Next year, more than 64 hectares of seagrass and algae will be replanted on the seabed to promote marine biodiversity.
