ORCA AI navigational aid wins certification

ORCA says it is the first time an AI-based navigation platform has received the certification.

Combining artificial intelligence and imaging technology, ORCA’s system was launched in 2019 to supplement existing onboard sensors with an AI-powered navigation and vessel tracking system that allows crews to detect ships in any situation at any distance with enough time to take action if needed to avoid collision.

The software platform, supported by computer vision sensors, thermal and low-light cameras, is already being used by well-known brands in the industry, ORCA says.

“This certification will significantly increase situational awareness and ultimately enhance maritime navigation and augmentation of crews with the use of data intelligence,” said co-founder and chief technology officer Dor Raviv.

The system is available for use on ships and also remotely by fleet managers.

The American Bureau of Shipping’s PDA certification is “a voluntary and efficient product approval solution suitable for qualified manufacturers who are targeting promotion of their products to the marine and offshore market sectors’, said Gareth Burton, vice-president, Technology, at the ABS.

“This product will assist the development and use of advanced technologies such as AI and data analytics to improve marine operations.”
