Commercial endorsement course at Seawork

A new course by the RYA, specifically aimed at those working commercially within the maritime industry, will be launched at Seawork 2012.

During Seawork, staff on the RYA stand will be on hand to explain the new course and to help visitors understand how to go about accessing it. The course is available from 2 April 2012 and will be compulsory from that date for all new applicants for commercial endorsements. From the beginning of June 2012, those applying to renew their commercial endorsement will also need to have completed the course. If a commercial endorsement is not due for renewal for some time, holders do not have to complete the course until that time.

The Professional Practices and Responsibilities (PPR) course will be available online and can be completed in the comfort of home or office at the individual’s own pace. It is designed to assist in finding the way around the basic regulations and guidelines to assist skippers and crew in complying with the various rules and regulations under which they must operate. It is not a course in maritime law but rather, a users’ guide on how to find the information needed to operate a vessel on a commercial basis. It is aimed at skippers and crew but will also be useful for those responsible for the management of coded vessels or charter operations.

The course will be available from 2 April and will cost £31 plus VAT. The cost has been kept low deliberately to make it as accessible as possible to the RYA’s large number of commercial endorsement holders.
