Enhanced facilities Mustang sails to Seawork
Pembroke Dock based Mustang Marine (Wales) Ltd travels to Seawork this summer buoyant in the knowledge that a new covered slipway enhances the company’s ability to carry out substantial conversion projects and represents one of the largest covered slipways in the UK.
The new shed replaces the previous shed which was 30m wide and 20m long with 11m clear working air draft. The new shed provides a 36m long covered slip with a 17m clear working air draft: this also gives a 30m span over a 450 ton slip and large cradle which will take ships up to 45m long with a 12m beam. Further there is an 80 ton slip which will take vessels up to 20m long with beams up to 7m.
The new facility represents Mustang Marine’s continued commitment to servicing the commercial workboat market and will serve to enhance both productivity and turnaround times by way of affording greater cover from the weather to the work area. The enclosing of the work space will also serve to mitigate nuisance to neighbours from dust and paint drift. The company has invested heavily in access equipment, paint application and environmental equipment to ensure that the yard can maintain high standards of productivity, safe working, quality and environmental compliance.
The slipway offers a closed loop wash down facility for washing large commercial craft, with the recovered waste water being recycled and the antifouling residues collected. Mustang believes this facility is one of the first in the UK and represents the company’s commitment to the environment.
The company has recently achieved both ISO 9001:2008 quality accreditation together with ISO 14001:2004 environmental accreditation. Both accreditations were validated by SGS Ltd.
Mustang Marine currently employs some 60 personnel during busy periods and has a comprehensive set of facilities in addition to the slipway, which include two purpose built 36m by 20m fabrication facilities, with three 5 ton overhead gantries with 8m under hook. There is an 18m by 16m fabrication/fitting out shed and a dedicated 20m by 8m fitting out shop, plus a shipwright/joinery workshop with comprehensive woodworking plant. A machine shop is attached, with plate folding, shearing and punching. Mustang offers synergic MIG, TIG and MMA welding capabilities, with coded welders all qualified to Lloyds Register procedures in aluminium, mild and stainless steel.
The drawing office is equipped with a 3D CAD (AutoCAD 2002), 3D surface modelling (AeroHydro – Multi Surf), Albacore – ShipConstructor specialist naval architectural software, and Wolfson unit hydrostatic and stability software.
The permanent work force consists of 58 personnel including principals, with 44 direct operatives comprising shipwright platers, coded welders, electrical technicians, shipwright joiners and mechanical fitters.
Mustang Marine is looking forward to a busy slipping season with a number of new clients and many regulars. Kevin Lewis, Lucas Boissevain and Ian Strugnell will all be on the Mustang marine stand at Seawork 2010 to discuss any and all customer needs.
