Hands free at Seawork

There is always a wealth of new product launches at Seawork and that tradition will be proudly upheld at the 2009 event. Marine electronics is a fast moving category and this year will see the first floating handheld VHF with a functional hands free Bluetooth headset on Stand 112.

Standard Horizon is adding this handheld with Bluetooth capability to its floating handheld VHF range with the HX760E, an upgraded version of the HX750E. It includes the new Standard Horizon BH-2 Bluetooth hands free headset.

The Bluetooth capability and new BH-2 Bluetooth headset gives true hands free operation since it’s capable of VOX (voice operated transmit) operation, where simply speaking will switch the set to transmit. Stop speaking and the set returns to receive mode. For those who prefer manual operation, the set can be manually switched.

The BH-2 headset has a range of up to 10m (30ft) from the handheld, allowing the user freedom of movement around the vessel. An LED indicator on the headset indicates when in or out of range and when battery power is low.

There are four power outputs of 1/2/5 and 6W, powered by a 1,150mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Audio power is a loud 700mW. It is programmed with full international channels for the European market,

Visitors to Stand 165 will find the Seakeeper SK7000 gyro stabiliser, which has no external appendages, uses little power, is completely selfcontained and needs little maintenance. Running the flywheel inside a partial vacuum allows the rotor to spin at 10,000 rpm, generating far greater righting forces for a given size, weight and power than previously possible.

To further increase its effectiveness, the Seakeeper uses active braking to automatically compensate for changing sea conditions. A single SK7000 will work on vessels up to 30 tons and for larger vessels, multiple gyros can be fitted.

Mastervolt’s new GPRS module, which provides remote monitoring and full control, can be found on Stand Q3.

Using simple SMS text messaging via a mobile phone, Mastervolt’s new GPRS module not only allows operators to remotely control the operation of all the electrical appliances onboard the vessel (battery charger, heater, dehumidifier, etc), it also provides a full report of all the essential readings, even down to the level of fuel in the tanks. This makes installation straightforward and keeps down the costs.

The Mastervolt module incorporates the GPRS module into its MasterBus system, which connects all the electrical devices into a single network.

McMurdo’s new Fast Find compact personal location beacon (PLB), has been approved for sale throughout the European Union and will be featured on McMurdo’s stand at Seawork.

Weighing 150g but still capable of alerting professional SAR services, even in the most remote parts of the world, McMurdo says it is the most compact, waterproof and versatile 406MHz emergency location beacon on the market today and you can see it next month on Stand 153.
