New Axiom propeller

UK propeller manufacturer, Axiom Propellers Ltd, has designed a new DWS type propeller, suitable for workboats and shipping vessels up to 150ft.

The Axiom DWS will be at Seawork 2013

The new propeller, which is available in two, three and four blade forms, enables vessels to maintain a faster average speed, even in adverse weather conditions, reducing passage times. It also reduces propeller slip, resulting in 5% to 8% less fuel consumption.

David Watts, joint owner of Axiom, said: “The DWS prop is the result of many years of research and development and is designed specifically to have improved performance together with better handling and stopping. The prop is unique in its blade symmetry, giving equal thrust ahead and astern, never before achieved with marine propellers.”

The UK’s Shotley Marine Services is currently testing the DWS on its pilot boat, Bumbly II.

Martin Kendall, workshop manager, Shotley Marine Services, explained: “Bumbly II now responds quicker going ahead from a standing start and has very good thrust for towing alongside. The turning circle both port and starboard has been reduced and she will go astern in a straight line. Stopping distance has been reduced, as long as the revs are applied slowly. As a bonus, at cruising speeds, Bumbly II now produces a totally flat wake.”

Axiom’s newest propeller will be on show at Seawork 2013.
