SeaStar docking for Cheetah at Seawork

Isle of Wight UK based Cheetah Marine’s 9m demonstration boat, ‘Cheetah’, has been fitted with SeaStar Solutions’ Optimus 360 joystick docking system.

The system enables slow speed sideway movements

The new joystick controlled system, which is supplied by sole UK agents Hypro Marine, provides accurate 360 degree manoeuvrability for twin outboard powered vessels, enabling slow speed sideway movements when docking and manoeuvring in confined marinas.

Unlike Cheetah’s standard twin outboard configuration where the outboards are linked by mechanical tie bars, it operates each engine via its own electronically controlled hydraulic cylinder.

The joystick controls the individual engine position, as well as throttle and gear shift, enabling the vessel to be controlled by moving the joystick in the required direction. Wheel steering is also provided by an electronic helm for conventional higher speed control and a Cantrac display monitors the whole system.

Sea trials were completed in mid-March with demonstrations of sideways, diagonal and full rotational manoeuvres.

The Cheetah, which is based at Ventnor Haven on the Isle of Wight, is the world’s first catamaran to be fitted with the system. It is also the first installation outside of the US and the first of its kind using Honda propulsion.

The vessel will be on show at Seawork Exhibition 2013, taking place from 25 to 27 June 2013 in the ABP Port of Southampton. Cheetah Marine will have vessels on stands V2 and V36.
