Show stopping weather forecasting at Seawork
A new web based marine forecasting service will be on show at Seawork this year. www.PortCast.co.uk is MeteoGroup’ s weather forecasting service for nearshore and shoreside operations, providing accurate site specific wind and wave forecasts plus real time alerts and observations.
Accuracy of nearshore weather forecasts is essential for effective piloting and port operations. Claiming market leading accuracy, MeteoGroup’s nearshore forecasts have proven to improve planning by providing better information on available operating windows.
Along the coastline and especially in estuaries, meteorologists encounter problems with the output of global wave forecast models due to the low resolution of the model grid. MeteoGroup has developed a system whereby direction dependent corrections influenced by the local environment are applied to the model output. In comparisons, this approach significantly improves the accuracy of wind and wave forecasts.
MeteoGroup’s Richard Hogg highlighted the flexibility of the service, saying, ‘Due to its modular nature, PortCast is suited to any size operation with clients able to build a service according to operational and budgetary requirements. With a tailored service at competitive rates, higher accuracy and 24/7 access to a forecaster there’s no reason to look beyond PortCast for all weather forecasting requirements’
PortCast’s nearshore ‘rose’ forecast model produces forecasts specific to individual ports, taking into account any local variation. Users also benefit from specialist ‘site specific’ forecasting onshore. Using the standard high resolution forecast models, MeteoGroup’s own models factor in geographical information and historical observations to produce weather forecasts downscaled to be specific to any location worldwide.
Visitors to Seawork will be able to see PortCast in action on MeteoGroup’s exhibition stand 19.
