Damen launches Russian trailer in Vietnam
The Netherlands-based Damen Shipyards Group has launched an ice class trailing suction hopper dredger for the Russian Port Agency, FSUE Rosmorport.
The Damen TSHC 2000 Severnaya Dvina has been built at the Song Thu Corporation shipyard at Da Nang in Vietnam under Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RMRS) rules and is the industry’s first ice class TSHD built directly under RMRS technical supervision for 30 years.
Following delivery, the 2,000 m³ Severnaya Dvina will maintain navigational depths and provide safe shipping in the Arkhangelsk Seaport basin and approaches.
The launching ceremony was attended by the Consul-General of the Russian Federation in Da Nang Andrey Brovarets, FSUE Rosmorport general director Andrey Tarasenko, representatives from RMRS, Damen and from Damen’s business cooperation partner Song Thu Corporation shipyard.
FSUE Rosmorport awarded the contract to Damen following an open tender in 2013. Project manager Harrold van Vliet said Damen tailored the TSHD 2000 design to meet the high specifications required to operate the vessels in the severe weather conditions of Russia’s northern region, with air temperatures ranging from -30°C to +40°C.
“The Severnaya Dvina has a reinforced bow with ICE 1 notation so it can continue dredging in waters approaching freezing point, and then relocate with icebreaker support. During the engineering phase we held regular design review meetings with the client to ensure we delivered exactly the capability they required.”
Fitted with a complete Damen Dredging Equipment dredge and instrumentation package, the vessel is designed for efficient operation and ease of maintenance. Equipment includes a 600mm diameter trailing pipe and hydraulic winches, a low pressure Damen inboard dredge pump for the most efficient hopper loading process, telescopic overflow and five rod-actuated bottom doors.
The 80.35m LOA vessel has a beam of 16.2m, a dredging draught of 5.1m and a hopper capacity of 2,000m3. The Damen Type BP 6055LD dredge pump has a mixture capacity of 6,250m3/h and enables dredging to depths of 22m through the single trailing suction pipe.
Damen Dredging Equipment has also recently completed another successful cooperation with Bilbao based Astilleros de Murueta, which designed the 1,200 m3 TSHD Hondarra. It is the fourth hopper dredger built in this Spanish-Dutch cooperation and will be deployed to perform maintenance dredging duties in the harbour of Bayonne and supply sand to the nearby beaches. The Hondarra is the first dredger for CCI Bayonne Pays Basque.
All design including the basic design as well as the naval architecture has been done by the yard. The 61.8 m long vessel features an aft superstructure and, in addition to the trailing pipe system, a 3.2 m3 bucket grab crane.
As with all previous collaborations with Damen Dredging Equipment, all dredging equipment has been delivered by the Dutch company.
