German university’s research vessel to be built in the UK

Following the success of the first 15m survey vessel built for a German university in 2018, University of Rostock, has ordered their new 15m survey research vessel with Blyth Catamarans after a successful tender.

With delivery due for late 2020 this survey vessel is to have Tier III engines installed taking the emission levels to a new low level.

The vessel will be used in joint partnership between the University of Rostock and its partners at the University of Greifswald, the universities of Wismar and Stralsund. These groups of Universities will be able to research and gather data for varying coastal projects, from marine habitats to climate change effects among many others.

Beside the ship crew, this vessel will be able to accommodate 12 scientists, leading the way in the research field around the coast of Germany. Their highly specialised equipment will include built-in powerful PCs, fully developed LAN and WLAN network technology with internet access, multibeam echo sounder, motion sensor and sub-bottom profiler, hydraulically operated stern A – frame and hydraulic deck crane, among many other items of specialised technology. Upon completion, this vessel will represent and provide a handy and efficient platform for scientific research and teaching.
