Rescue boat ballast system
Salmon Power Sports is to supply dynamic ballast systems for a range of new rescue boats being built for Dutch sea rescuers.
The rigid-hulled inflatable boats are being developed by Palfinger for use by the Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution-Koninklijke Nederlandse Redding Maatschappij (KNRM).
“This contract is especially meaningful for Salmon Power Sports, as our system was included in the vessel specifications at the request of the volunteer crews, who have experience with our system on their current Atlantic 75 fleet,” said Joseph Salmon, managing director at Salmon Power Sports.
The Salmon Power Sports ballast system is said to reduce slamming of high-speed craft by 50-70%, reducing the risk of injury and allowing the helm to shift the craft’s longitudinal centre of gravity forward as required to control trim and get on to the plane faster.
“Taking on just a small amount of strategically positioned ballast drastically improves the seakeeping capabilities of the craft, enabling faster and safer operation in rough conditions,” said Mr Salmon.
Suitable for vessels from 7 to 24 metres, the system is already in use on more than 200 search and rescue vessels across Europe, including the entire RNLI Atlantic 75 & 85 fleet. The first boat is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, undergoing testing for three months after which the remaining 11 will be constructed.
