Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has embarked on a new revenue stream with eyes on subsea technology and development, the company says.

Announcing a target to reel in €820 million in revenue, the company says it will set up an ‘Underwater Technology Hub’ to integrate civil, military and dual-use underwater capabilities under unified management, bringing together expertise in submarine systems, acoustic and radar technologies, unmanned vehicles and topside deployment solutions.

The ambition comes against the backdrop of the new UK-EU cooperation on security and resilience, particularly regarding critical infrastructure, it says, with sea lines of communication under threat.

“The underwater domain, where civilian and defence needs increasingly overlap, is emerging as a key battleground for strategic autonomy and innovation,” the company says. “Now positioned as a core pillar of the Group’s future, aligned with international demand and national capabilities, Fincantieri has presented its comprehensive industrial roadmap, targeting significant growth: the segment is expected to generate €820 million in revenue by 2027, doubling its 2024 share to 8% of Group turnover, with an estimated EBITDA of €152 million and an estimated EBITDA margin of nearly 19%.”

“The consolidation of cross-sector demand in defence, dual-use, and civilian applications is making underwater technology a strategic priority for governments and industries,” said CEO and general manager Pierroberto Folgiero.

“We’re already shaping a portfolio aligned with the operational needs of both the national system and our international partners. Our course is set: strengthen critical capabilities, lead the sector’s evolution, and contribute – responsibly and ambitiously – to building the underwater ecosystem of the future.”
