Nordic firms unite on smart subsea security

A new Nordic partnership aims to redefine marine monitoring and subsea security with smart, resilient subsea infrastructure.

Tykoflex AB and Kongsberg Discovery announced a strategic collaboration to integrate fibre optic closures with advanced sensing and communication technologies for intelligent subsea systems.

“This partnership has the potential to unlock something truly significant. By combining proven infrastructure with advanced sensing and communication technologies, we are laying the groundwork for a persistent, intelligent subsea network,” said Richard Petersson Wigh, CEO of Tykoflex AB.

Joint solution

The joint solution leverages Tykoflex’s durable subsea closures, which are already in wide use across global subsea cable networks, and Kongsberg Discovery’s decades of experience in offshore technology, including surveillance, autonomous systems and satellite connectivity.

This combination promises enhanced security and dual-use functionality for both civilian research and defence applications.

From monitoring underwater noise pollution affecting marine life to protecting vital subsea infrastructure, the new solution supports distributed sensing and real-time situational awareness.

It also strengthens the resilience of undersea networks amid increasing geopolitical tension and recent damage to subsea pipelines in the Baltic Sea.

“This collaboration comes at a critical moment,” said Martin Wien Fjell, president of Kongsberg Discovery. “Together, we aim to help shape new ways of protecting and securing the seabed in an era of emerging risks.”

Back in January, Kongsberg Discovery snapped up the Norwegian underwater environmental monitoring firm Naxys Technologies. Protecting marine life and monitoring critical infrastructure are important focus areas for Kongsberg Discovery, which has continued to develop hydroacoustics products since the first sonar was launched in the 1950s.
