Boskalis 31,000m3 dredger launched by Royal IHC

Built by Dutch shipbuilder Royal IHC at its shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, Netherlands, the new trailing suction hopper dredger Seaway can carry 31,000m³ of material, ranking it in the top five dredgers by capacity in the world.

Seaway was christened by Ande Berdowksi, the wife of the chairman of Boskalis’ supervisory board.

Like many new vessels, this one has been designed to run on methanol, while having a full diesel-electric Azipods propulsion system. Boskalis says it has an optimised hull design and advanced automation and is due to enter service in 2026.

While one of Boskalis’ largest dredgers, Seaway is small compared with some of Belgian firm Jan De Nul’s vessels, boasting two dredgers with 46,0000m³ capacity.

Cristóbal Colón and Leiv Eiriksson are both trailing suction hopper dredgers owned by the firm, built in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
