Electric tugboat debuts in Shenzhen

In service since mid-July, Shen Gang Dian Tuo 1 underscores the terminal’s dedication to decarbonisation and aligns with the port’s long-term vision of achieving a zero-carbon future.

Located in western Shenzhen and operated by Modern Terminals Limited, DaChan Bay Terminals is advancing its green port strategy through innovative technologies. The new electric tugboat is operated by Shenzhen DaChan Bay Towing Co. in which DaChan Bay Terminals holds an equity stake.

With a powerful 6,880 kWh battery system, the tugboat is reportedly the most powerful pure electric tugboat in South China. Its operation is expected to reduce diesel usage by more than 300 tonnes per year and cut direct carbon emissions by approximately 1,000 tonnes. Additionally, it operates at a reported 20 decibels quieter than conventional tugboats, contributing to a cleaner and quieter port environment.

DaChan Bay Terminals has been focused on green innovation since its opening, becoming reportedly the world’s first terminal to operate a full fleet of electric rubber-tyred gantry cranes in 2007.

In recent years, the terminal has further advanced its decarbonisation strategy by electrifying internal haulage fleets, mobile equipment and offering shore power at all berths.
