Hybrid solar system powers historic boatyard

A new hybrid solar and storage system is powering one of West London’s most historic marine construction sites, bringing clean energy innovation to the waterfront.

GoodWe, in partnership with Wagner Renewables Ltd, has completed a bespoke solar power and battery storage installation at MSO Marine in Brentford, UK.

The pioneering project combines rooftop and barge-mounted photovoltaic (PV) systems with a GoodWe ET-50 hybrid inverter and 102.4 kWh BAT112 battery, supporting vessel power needs while boosting the site’s sustainability and resilience.

“This project shows the flexibility and power of GoodWe’s hybrid technology,” said Ezgi Yilmaz, marketing manager at GoodWe.

”Working with Wagner, we delivered a tailor-made solution that brings renewable energy even to complex and historic locations like MSO Marine.” 

Renewables integration

The installation integrates marine renewables and solar generation through two PV systems – one on the workshop roof and another on a barge, designed to maximise energy production while minimising structural load.

The barge-mounted array is a landmark example of vessel power innovation, using the Thames itself as part of the renewable infrastructure.

Wagner Renewables also implemented a flood-protected, custom-engineered plinth for the battery system, ensuring long-term performance despite the boatyard’s riverside setting.

The hybrid setup enables MSO Marine to reduce grid dependence, optimise energy tariffs, and enhance operational efficiency for ongoing marine construction and maintenance projects.

By combining solar power with marine renewables, the Brentford installation highlights how traditional industries can harness modern technology to achieve cleaner, more resilient energy systems along the UK’s waterways.
