India to build its first electric tug
India is to build its first electric tug under the Green Tug Transition Program (GTTP), a milestone in the country’s vessel electrification programme.
Kongsberg Maritime will supply a fully integrated equipment package for the tug, in a contract awarded by Mandovi Drydocks in partnership with Ripley Group.
The company is already supplying technology solutions to a range of hybrid ‘e-tug’ projects, but this is the company’s first full-electric tug contract.
”Electric tugboats are a significantly different vessel from traditional mechanical tugs, and owners and yards need confidence in these new emission-reducing technologies,” said Mark Callaway, senior sales manager, tug systems, Kongsberg Maritime.
“By delivering a complete solution, from propellor to battery, we were able to earn Mandovi and Ripley’s trust that the final product will achieve their emission reduction goals set forth by the GTTP programme.”
Built at home
Launched by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the India’s green tug programme aims to replace diesel-powered harbour tugs with zero-emission electric alternatives.
These next-generation tugs will initially feature battery-electric propulsion, with scope for hybrid, methanol, and green hydrogen technologies as the sector evolves.
Backed by an investment of INR 1000 Crores, Phase 1 will run from October 2024 to December 2027, with four major ports procuring or chartering at least two green tugs each.
The country’s first electric tug will be built in Indian shipyards, supporting domestic vessel building and job creation.
This tug, of NavNautik India’s Design, will have 60-tonne bollard pull. It will be delivered and commissioned in Q4 2026 and will operate at Deendayal Port, in Gujarat, one of the key sites under the GTTP initiative promoted by the Government of India.
Kongsberg’s equipment package includes its permanent magnet (PM) driven azimuth thrusters, advanced electrical systems including energy storage (ESS), automation and control (K-Chief and K-Chief PMS), vessel insight and vessel performance digital solutions, and full system integration.
Operational support will be provided by Kongsberg Maritime India’s Global Customer Support team, ensuring confidence and lifecycle value for the owner and port operator.
Beyond 2033, every new tug built for Indian ports must comply with green standards, cementing long-term sustainability in maritime operations under the country’s Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
By 2040, India envisions all major port tugs transitioning to green propulsion, ensuring a fully eco-friendly fleet.
