PME repowers pilot vessel

When the time came to repower Picton, the port turned to PME Group, the UK’s importer of MAN marine engines, to deliver a cutting-edge propulsion solution.

The deal was originally inked at Seawork in Southampton in 2022.

“Ensuring the safety of our people and efficiency of our operations is paramount, and we are delighted with the choice to install the MAN engines supplied by PME Group,” said Luke Mason, mechanical and electrical maintenance manager at the Port of Milford Haven.

“The repowering of Picton has reduced the associated engine noise in the wheelhouse, improved the power delivery, giving smooth and reliable acceleration on demand, as well as reducing the physical footprint of the powerplant in the engine room.”

The 2024 upgrade saw the installation of two MAN D2868 LE 446 engines, supplied by PME Group.

These workhorse V8 engines are set to complement the port’s existing pilot vessel fleet which operates in demanding conditions.

With this upgrade, the Picton is now well-equipped to support the port’s commitment to providing safe and efficient port operations, ensuring pilots can continue guiding vessels smoothly through Milford Haven’s busy environment.
