Rolls-Royce powers African electric ferry route
Rolls-Royce will supply eight mtu electric generators powering Baleària’s electric ferry project, enabling emissions free shipping on a new Europe–Africa route.
From 2027, the vessels will operate the 18-nautical-mile route between Tarifa, Spain and Tangier, Morocco, creating the first green maritime corridor linking Europe and Africa.

“The mtu gensets from Rolls-Royce meet these requirements perfectly and help to provide additional backup for the ferries’ electrical systems.”
Secure systems
Each ferry will be equipped with four mtu 20V4000M35S emergency power generators, supplied on behalf of shipyard Astilleros Armon.
Delivering 2,840 kilowatts each, the generators provide a combined backup output exceeding 11,000 kW. They ensure continuous power availability if on-board batteries cannot be charged as planned while also supporting critical systems.
Unlike conventional solutions, the mtu units are designed to secure not only electrical systems but also the entire vessel propulsion chain in emergency situations.
Their compact design, low weight, and high-power density make them particularly suitable for high-speed ferries operating fully electric configurations.
Capable of speeds up to 26 knots, each electric ferry will carry 804 passengers and 225 vehicles, reinforcing the role of advanced electrical generators in enabling emissions free shipping.
Delivery of the generators is scheduled for the first half of 2026, with the identical catamarans entering service in 2027.
