Sanmar delivers emissions-compliant tug to SAAM

SAAM Towage has taken delivery of a tug from Sanmar Shipyards, strengthening its fleet performance, vessel efficiency and emissions compliance.

The SAAM Guanay vessel build expands the company’s Boğaçay Class line-up. It’s the 13th unit delivered to the operator by Sanmar Shipyards and is based on Robert Allan’s RAmparts 2400SX MKII design.

Green tug

The tug’s compact platform has been engineered for manoeuvring in restricted port environments, combining high installed power with versatility to improve turnaround times and vessel efficiency.

SAAM Guanay complies with IMO Tier III environmental standards through Caterpillar 3516E engines paired with a selective catalytic reduction system, cutting NOx emissions while maintaining performance. Measuring 24.4 metres in length with a 12-metre beam, it delivers 80 tonnes of bollard pull.

Other features include FiFi-1 firefighting capability and advanced automation systems designed to optimise energy use across all operating phases, enhancing vessel efficiency and lowering fuel consumption. A wide beam supports stability and safer shiphandling.

Sanmar commercial director, Rüçhan Çıvgın, said the partnership reflects shared sustainability goals, adding that the yard is “proud to support their expansion with state-of-the-art vessels.”

With this build, SAAM Towage is continuing its long partnership with Sanmar. In 2024, we reported that SAAM Towage’s Trapananda, an ElectRA 2500SX Sanmar-built tug, had completed sea trials and was going into operation as the first fully electric tug in Latin America.
