Shipyard contracted to build floating hotel

The Flotilla project is a joint one between Holland Shipyards and Amsterdam-headquartered Good Hotel.

With the help of Royal HaskoningDHV, which is responsible for the structural design of the top structure, the hotel will float on a concrete barge with no propulsion system of its own.

The entire modular structure will be built at the shipyard then towed to its final destination – which neither Holland Shipyards nor Good Hotel has yet revealed.

Holland Shipyard says the hotel will operate entirely without using fossil fuels, depending to a large extent on its rooftop solar panels for electricity.

It would not say where the hotel is destined for, nor how it will be moved around – presumably with tugs.

“Its roof will serve as a sustainable energy plant, equipped with highly efficient solar panels strategically positioned for optimal energy capture,” says Holland. “””The Flotilla is designed to be passively immune to extreme weather conditions, featuring high-insulation walls, roof and heat-resistant glazing.”

Other partners in the Flotilla floating hotel project include Ninetynine, which is doing the architecture and interior design, and DWA, which is Holland’s sustainability consultant.

Last month, Holland Shipyards built a fully electric ro-ro vessel for Snam, in Italy.

The 50m x 14m vessel has been designed as a battery-powered shuttle ferry to travel between the Panigaglia LNG terminal and the port of La Spezia. It is powered by two 300 kW L drive thrusters powered by more than 1MWh battery pack.
